Back in 2013 I made my first “$10k bet” — I borrowed $10,000 from a ski resort in order to launch a tour & travel business which I grew to multiple 7-figures and sold in 2022. Now I’m sharing my journey and what I’ve learned from building businesses over the last 10 years along with real time progress on my current projects.
I ran an A/B test on my email capture popup and wanted to share the results (for jobboardly.com) and why I do this The goal: Turn lookers into bookers I ran the test with three variants. Disclaimer: This wouldn't be considered a true A/B test since all three are a little different but I'm lazy so it's close enough for me Variant 1: Small slide in immediately upon entry -> bottom right corner ($50 off) 1.88% email capture rate (I SUCK) Variant 2: Small Exit Intent -> 10 step action guide (no discount) 1.92% email capture rate (I STILL SUCK) Variant 3: Large Exit Intent -> 10 step action guide (no discount) 4.46% email capture rate (YES BBY!!) Why use this popup? Since we are an LTD product we don't have an free trial which means we need a way to nurture lower intent folks This is straight out of the ecom playbook and I believe it works for saas What I found most interesting about this test was that almost every time I've ever tested this before the popup that comes in immediately upon entry usually outperforms the others. In this case it didn't, even though the two were different sizes All leads go into a 6 email welcome sequence with tips and inspiration and hopefully leads to more sales (working on expanding this to 10 emails). Here is what the first email looks like: I know no one likes popups but my feeling is that any traffic where I don't at least attempt to capture an email is partly a wasted session Popups are perfectly acceptable in ecommerce and content sites so I say why not saas too! More leads = more sales! If you found this interesting follow me on X @davidsonkyle for more stories from 10+ years of successes and failures as a bootstrapped entrepreneur |
